Substitutions & Lineup Planning

There is no pause button once a match kicks off. You can't drag a player off at the 60th minute because the game is watching him tire, and you can't shout instructions from the touchline mid-possession. Everything that happens during a match was decided beforehand. Goal Legends gives you two separate tools for that decision, and they solve two different problems.

Why there's no in-match control

Matches simulate on the game's own clock, whether or not you're logged in, and they run start to finish in one pass rather than pausing for input. See how matches are simulated for what actually happens during that pass. That's a deliberate trade: it means your fixture plays out on time even if you're asleep or at work, but it also means the lineup and formation, your tactical settings, and your substitution plan are all locked in the moment the match kicks off and stay that way until it ends. Preparation isn't a suggestion here, it's the entire interface you have into the match.

Planned substitutions

A planned substitution is a rule, not a one-off action: you set it in advance and the match engine applies it automatically during play if the conditions you set it up for arise. You're not clicking a button in real time, because there is no real time to click it in. Think of it as leaving instructions with an assistant who will actually be in the dugout, rather than making the call yourself as it happens.

Staging a lineup for one fixture

Every club has a single live lineup, the one you set on the Lineup page, and by default that's what every match reads from, whether it's a league game on Saturday or a cup replay three days later. A fixture picker on that page lets you go further: leave it on "Default" and you're editing that same live roster exactly as before, but pick a specific upcoming fixture instead and you're now editing a separate, staged plan that applies to that match only. The live lineup underneath is untouched, and every other fixture on your calendar keeps using it.

A staged plan isn't locked in until it actually has to be. It gets checked right before that match simulates: all eleven starters still need to be on your roster and fit to play at that moment. If something about the plan has gone stale by kickoff, say a player you staged has since been sold or picked up an injury, the match doesn't fail or throw an error. It just falls back quietly to your live lineup instead, so a forgotten or outdated staged plan never accidentally costs you a match entirely.

One tool, every competition

This works across league fixtures, the Elite Champions Cup, the Domestic Cup and friendlies alike. Under the hood those four competition types actually keep entirely separate match records, so a staged plan is always tied to a specific competition and a specific match, not just a date on the calendar. In practice that means you can stage a different XI for a midweek cup tie without it ever touching the squad you've set for the league match either side of it.
